Catherine Freeman-Pates
Community Nurse Specialist at Sue Ryder’s Hospice
In 2022, after 14 years of nursing in hospices both on the wards and as a Community Nurse Specialist, as well as completing a Masters in Palliative Care, I decided to move into a clinical team leader role in Sue Ryder’s Hospice at Home service.
I am proud of our nurses and carers because they provide excellent care to people who wish to die at home in their last few weeks and months of life.
As a team leader now, I am delighted to be invited to participate in the FoNS Person-centred cultures leadership development programme. I believe it will help me to expand my hitherto patient-centred focus into a rounded person-centred approach. By intentionally attending to the needs of our nursing and care staff as well as those of our patients and facilitating small changes to the way we do things, we can ensure a sustainably high quality service and withstand the challenges that face our team in the context of a stretched NHS healthcare environment and an underfunded hospice sector.
