Lucy Berry
Community Learning Disability Nurse, Berkshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust
I am a Community Learning Disability Nurse. This is a rewarding role managing a caseload of adults with learning disabilities and their families/carers, who have a variety of needs, under supervision. This involves working in an MDT, using specialist skills to effectively communicate, completing health promotion and education, identifying risks and strategies to manage them, making appropriate referrals to other health professionals, using therapeutic interventions to support with health and behaviour aspects, whilst working under current legislation and policies to provide specialist health assessments, interventions and evaluating person centred programmes of care. It is vital to improve health outcomes and quality of life for this population group, by empowering people to access the healthcare services they need. I really enjoy providing holistic care and seeing the positive impact it has on people’s lives, enabling people to maximise their potential and live a fulfilled life.
This is a very exciting opportunity to develop leadership knowledge and skills, which I can use to benefit the team and the people who use our services. I am passionate and committed to putting people and their families at the heart of my nursing care and providing compassionate and life enhancing care and I view leadership as a valuable skill to support this. I am looking forward to sharing what I learn with my team, and also supporting other professionals, including students, to achieve their potential, ensure effective person- centred high quality care for our patient group.
