Rachel Giles

Ward Manager, General Medical / Endocrinology Ward, William Harvey Hospital, Ashford, Kent

I qualified in 1996 with a Bachelor of Nursing Degree and worked in a small hospital on a Care of the Elderly Rehabilitation Ward for 2 years. I then moved to a medical ward and have worked on medical wards since then. I spent 18 years on a gastroenterology ward prior to my current role. In November 2018 I became a Ward Manager of a Medical / Endocrinology Ward. It had just 4 substantive staff. Since then, it has become a fully recruited ward with quite a new and ‘young’ team.

There are 32 members of the team with a variety of life experiences and work experience and knowledge. We aim to provide care of a high standard that is individualised. We are due to take part in the ‘We Care’ Programme that the trust has implemented. We work closely with the medical and therapy team on the ward to ensure patients have a safe and timely discharge.

I am keen to help the new team grow and develop and with the tools given by the Inspire Improvement Fellowship, the ward can become a ‘beacon’ ward reflecting a person-centred culture. I am looking forward to networking and sharing ideas and inspiration with the group that we can then put into practice.

I am passionate about nursing and providing excellent care for every patient. My team are keen to learn and try new things and I am looking forward to discovering new challenges and changes along the way.

By becoming an Inspire Improvement Fellow, I am looking forward to reviewing my own leadership styles and looking at ways of improving and challenging myself for the good of the team and myself. I particularly enjoy the creative aspect of practice development and its potential in helping to foster a person-centred culture.
