Mark Bird
Vice Chair
Mark Bird is Chairperson of the Enhanced Care Steering Group in the London Borough of Brent, a group which supports registered managers to achieve best practice and create partnership working.
He has a BSc in nursing and 30 years’ experience across the NHS and social care. After training at The Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle Upon Tyne, Mark moved to London and became one of the first Modern Matrons.
The pinnacle of his career in social care was in 2019 when he was awarded Registered Manager of the Year, London Region at the British Care Awards.
In a change of direction, Mark joined the Metropolitan Police Service as a response officer. During this time, he developed new skills whilst serving the community. He was recognised with a distinction of service award before retiring from the police.
Mark is a national influencer and presented at England’s Chief Nurse Summit 2020 on his experience of ‘how to achieve outstanding care within a large service’: he is one of a small handful of Registered Managers to have achieved ‘outstanding’ from the Care Quality Commission.
The purpose of the Foundation of Nursing Studies is dear to Mark’s heart. As a trustee he intends to use his considerable experience to help staff across the UK access opportunities to develop their skills no matter how they started in life.
