Seonaid Walker

Community Learning Disability Nurse, South West Yorkshire Partnership Foundation Trust, Wakefield

I am a learning disability nurse working in the community as part of a multi-disciplinary team. We provide specialist healthcare to adults with learning disabilities whose needs cannot be met by mainstream services alone. I work closely with patients, their families/carers to ensure they receive the best healthcare dependant on their needs.

As a community nurse I enjoy building positive therapeutic relationships and making sure a person’s care is planned effectively around their wishes and also taking into account the  reason we have received a referral in the first place.

Within our team there is a huge amount of knowledge and I love working alongside other professionals to better expand my skill base as well as bounce ideas together because sometimes a fresh pair of eyes can help think of other techniques I may not have even thought of.

Being able to support people in their own homes and seeing them flourish is such a rewarding part of my job and I love working within this field of nursing.

I am hoping to gain more knowledge and skills that will be beneficial for my role. As I am still relatively newly qualified, I am hoping this programme will allow me to grow in confidence in my own abilities and therefore allow me to support my patients more effectively.
