Plain Words for Nurses: Writing and Communicating Effectively

By Alison Turnbull

N.B. This book has now sold out.

This book, published by FoNS in September 2001 , is aimed at helping nurses and other healthcare professionals write and communicate more effectively. The book is the first of its type specifically written for nurses, midwives and health visitors and has been supported by 3M Healthcare Ltd.

The impetus to write the book came from research carried out by FoNS in 1998 which identified key obstacles for nurses trying to apply new research within their own practice. Nurses said that while valuable data on best practice is being gathered, reports are often jargonistic, inaccessible and their implications for improving practice unclear. Information prepared for patients may also be full of inappropriate jargon and difficult to understand.

"Plain Words for Nurses" is an educational tool to help overcome these problems and advise on effective writing and presenting techniques. Written in a friendly, informal style and containing lively illustrations, topics include clear research writing for journals and other publications, challenging jargon, patient communication, public speaking, more effective use of statistics and writing for the Internet.

The author, Alison Turnbull , is a freelance editor who has 24 years' experience in journalism. In the past she has worked for the National Childbirth Trust and the King's Fund. Alison says: "I'm concerned that nursing research and best practice sometimes don't reach a wider audience because they are wrapped up in complicated words and phrases. I hope this publication will help busy practitioners and researchers to communicate better with each other and with the people in their care."

"Plain Words for Nurses" has been prepared with the assistance of a large team of health care professionals, the Plain English Campaign and Helen Scott, Editor of the British Journal of Nursing.
